Last night, under the glow of Juneteenth celebrations, I was humbled to accept the inaugural Fashion Award at the Beauté Noire Dandy Dinner & Gala, hosted by the visionary Janell Stephens of Camille Rose Naturals. The evening was more than a personal milestone—it was a radiant tribute to the creativity, resilience, and unshakable brilliance of our community.
Standing on that stage, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me here—from the quiet streets of Stone Mountain, Georgia, to the dazzling lights of the Met Gala. Every step has been fueled by faith, an unwavering commitment to my craft, and the rich cultural tapestry that shapes my work. Fashion, for me, has always been more than fabric and trends; it’s a language of identity, empowerment, and legacy.
A Celebration of Vision and Vibrancy
The gala was a masterclass in Black excellence. The ballroom pulsed with energy, a symphony of bold prints, sharp tailoring, and unapologetic glamour. Janell Stephens, the genius behind Camille Rose, transformed the space into a floral paradise, where every detail—from the décor to the dazzling attendees—spoke to the beauty of Black creativity.
Among the honorees were pioneers in beauty, fashion, and entrepreneurship, each recognized for carving paths and building platforms that uplift our community. To be counted among these trailblazers was both an honor and a reminder of the responsibility we carry—to keep pushing boundaries and opening doors for those who follow.
A Room Full of Stars
The night was made even more magical by the constellation of familiar faces and kindred spirits. Yandy Smith commanded attention in a vibrant yellow Oyemwen pantsuit, while Monyetta Shaw epitomized timeless elegance in black satin Dolce & Gabbana. The legendary Derek J and Miss Lawrence brought their signature charisma, reminding us all that fashion is as much about personality as it is about style.
Other luminaries in attendance included fellow honoree Terri J. Vaughn, the incomparable Nicci Gilbert, beauty vlogger Lovely Ti, Producer Princess, and makeup artist Latasha Wright. The room buzzed with laughter, shared stories, and the kind of electric energy that only happens when Black excellence gathers in one place.
Juneteenth: A Fitting Backdrop
Receiving this award on Juneteenth added a profound layer of meaning. This day, which marks our ancestors’ hard-won freedom, is a reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much further we can go when we celebrate and support one another. The gala wasn’t just a party; it was a testament to the power of our culture to shape narratives, redefine industries, and inspire future generations.
From the red carpet interviews to the dance floor’s infectious energy, the night was a living, breathing ode to Black joy and achievement. It reinforced a truth I hold dear: our presence is our power.
For the Dreamers and Doers
This award isn’t just mine—it belongs to every dreamer who dares to defy expectations, every creator who turns vision into reality, and every designer who weaves culture into their craft. To those still climbing, remember: your journey matters. Keep going. Keep shining. And most importantly, keep lifting as you rise.
